"MIGRATION"

Using materials and processes tied to my Japanese heritage, I create works that explore my emigrant identity. Tag pieces mimic the traditions of Sashiko- patchwork of indigo blues- that were practiced by necessity by the rural poor of Japan. Simultaneously, the use of tags resonate with the Japanese-American history during WW2 where families were tagged like suitcases and taken to concentration camps across the country. These pieces made me ponder the history of immigration and tragedy and bravery of those who find themselves in new land.
